Inner Light Ministries was founded in 1997 as as part of the global New Thought spiritual movement, but today finds itself in a different world, with respect to media and connection with a broader audience. While this organization’s thinking and activism has always been cutting edge, its use of technology has typically been an afterthought.

The Multimedia Task Force was convened by Inner Light leadership, including myself, to extend the organization’s reach to a national and global community. This task force champions improved web and social media strategy, making it possible for anyone anywhere to be a part of the Inner Light community.

I chair a team of staff and volunteers to put a plan and teams in place to accomplish Inner Light’s multimedia outreach goals. In addition to facilitating the group in formulating our strategy, I introduced online collaboration tools to improve the efficiency and immerse the organization in tools used by virtual communities– which is exactly the kind of community we were trying to attract.

This task force is making significant progress and volunteer teams are forming as I write this. This project has a lesson for me in having the patience recruit a full team in order to avoid burn-out. In the case of Inner Light, there is so much to do and often not enough people to do it.  As an organization that relies on its community of volunteers, it is not acceptable to “use people up” and burn them out. Forming the team and making sure we don’t overload it has been important. I am also happy to witness how a little consistent leadership can go a long way. I have not been a task-master in this project, but by simply holding a constant vision of where we’re heading, the group has been able to make steady forward progress, whereas previous attempts have stagnated.
